Bloodhound STEM Ambassadors present at Science Day at St John’s-on-the-Hill

REID Lifting were invited to present to students at St John’s-on-the-Hill as part of their Science Day.

The lessons were centred around the Bloodhound SSC project. A unique, high-technology project to design and build a car that will break the 1,000mph barrier and set a new world land speed record. REID Lifting is a sponsor of the project, which uses two portable aluminium gantries to lift the engines and the supersonic car.

Luke Rossiter (Design Engineer) and Tim Battersby (Technical Sales Engineer) at REID Lifting and STEM ambassadors for Bloodhound SSC, took part in three lessons for years 4, 5 and 6.

The students were split into groups and tasked with building their own aerodynamic car using KNEX building sets. The groups were then asked to race each car. REID’s lightweight, portable gantry crane, PORTA-GANTRY RAPIDE, was used to suspend the ramp for the race. The group whose car reached the furthest distance were declared the winners.

Both Tim and Luke are passionate about engineering and were able to show the students an insight into careers in STEM. Tim, an alumnus of St John’s-on-the-Hill, informed the students of his pathway into engineering through apprenticeship.

The presentation/lessons were very well received by the pupils and staff at St John’s-on-the-Hill, especially as it involved an activity with REID product. A big thank you to St John’s-on-the-Hill for inviting us to be part of their Science Day.
