PORTA-GANTRY selected to prove safe ‘personnel lifting’ reduces injuries

The legislation and guidelines surrounding personnel lifting and fall arrest are perhaps not as well understood as they should be..

Health and Safety Executive statistics for 2011-2012 show that nearly a quarter of all fatal injuries in the workplace for this year were caused by falls from height; with the construction industry accounting for the highest number of these. To ensure the health and safety of employees, many businesses in these sectors implement personnel lifting and fall arrest guidelines.

Working at height or near drops is never without risk and should always be carried out with due care. Equipment used should always be designed to specifically accommodate personnel lifting in accordance with relevant health and safety guidelines. Fall arrest should always be implemented to protect any individual working at height, including elements such as full body harnesses and vertical lifelines.

To ensure safe practice throughout every industry, all equipment used for the purpose of personnel lifting is now required to have BS EN 795 accreditation as standard. Almost the whole of REID’s product range can be adapted for personnel lifting usage, and in many cases systems can be dual-rated for both goods and personnel lifting/fall arrest. Systems such as PORTA-DAVIT and PORTA-GANTRY can be certified EN795 Class B compliant and a wide range of system configurations can be supplied for work at height and confined space applications.

Due to their wide range of applications in the area of personnel lifting, REID products have been invited to take centre stage at the prestigious water quality event – WEFTEC. The main event, held in New Orleans, involved a number of emergency service teams from across America competing in a timed challenge where they had to lift an ‘injured’ individual to safety. REID’s PORTA-GANTRY RAPIDE was chosen as the personnel lifting device for its unrivalled ease of use, speed of construction and, of course, its BS EN 795 certification.
